This edited book explores the terror of “living dyingly”—the degradation of dignity, autonomy, and personal identity that often precedes physical death. Across nearly one hundred multidisciplinary contributions, the volume examines how existential decline, whether driven by chronic illness, aging, traumatic violence, or social oppression, threatens the core of human selfhood. The chapters address this crisis through diverse lenses: from palliative care, spirituality, and death education to bioethical dilemmas surrounding self-determination and life-sustaining technology. Expanding beyond the individual, the book also confronts the agonies of collective social identities, tackling the friction of multiculturalism, migration, stigma, and global conflict.
